Eyes Wide Open…with a difference…
join a small group tour in May or September 2012.
Our help is making a difference to 2 villages in Cambodia. We need to get back…and soon. Come with us for 10 days and volunteer while enjoying experiencing the mystical and hospitable Cambodian way of life. Culture, history and adventure in Siem Reap, Battambang and Phnom Phen await. During the November 2011 Echuca College Schoolies tour a remote village school was introduced to us by our guide - Rithy. During the January 2012 tour we built on the schoolie’s efforts. The village school childrens’ food situation, general learning, English and physical building surrounds were improved. Still though there is much to be done. In May we will work for 3 days equipping a shipping container to make a general purpose area for cooking, eating and learning. This will be a space for the general community, not just the school. We will also teach and have fun with the children.
Expect each day to be an adventure as we travel back and forth from our accomodation by bicyle or tuk tuk.
An hour from Phnom Phen is a remote village in the Kampong Speu region. 26 families live in utter poverty. Flooded in the wet season and no water in the dry season causes starvation, cholera and malaria. In November 2011 4 people including children died of cholera. Rotary clubs of Phnom Phen, Melbourne South and Echuca are working together to solve these issues. We will get involved in 2 days of volunteering to help..
Existing well run and successful projects that are Rotary assisted with provide a contrast to these two areas of terrible need and offer hope for the future. Delicious Khmer meals, 3-4 star accommodation, expert guiding by Rithy, a Rotarian leader, transport and insurance are included in the very reasonable price of $2599 (early bird discount) There are no administration costs associated with the tour and all profits are used for Rotary international projects.
